Does it have to be that way?

F rom the time athletes are little kids it is often a common practice on sports teams to pick captains. One, two, or three kids are generally chosen for this honor in a popularity contest. If you ask the coaches what their reasons are for having captains, they usually won't be able to tell you much more than "to lead the team".

Choosing of captains on youth teams is probably one of those things that happen "because the professional teams and college teams do it." The truth is that kids often don't respond well to "leadership" from their peers. Captains for youth teams usually don't have much positive effect, and sometimes have a negative effect.

Does it have to be that way? I don't think so. Are there ways to help kids and teens to be effective leaders for their teams? I believe that there are, and would like to share ideas through this website.

My background is in hockey, so the site is starting out with that focus. It should apply to many sports. If you have knowledge about other sports that would be helpful, please let me know.
